Dr. Bob

After 40 plus years of active medical practice and now as a semi-retired physician, I find myself with more leisure time to actively pursue some of my avocations. I still maintain a limited medical practice because it's hard to let go when you like what you do.

One of my passions is photography which I have been doing throughout my medical career. The other, a more recent avocation is writing because I have some very unusual stories to tell.

My upbringing was very unique. I grew up under the shadow of a father who was a very famous pro- basketball player in the 1920s and 1930s. He was recently inducted into the New York City's Basketball Hall of Fame. There is also a book about his professional life, "Play It Again Sam, The Sam Schoenfeld Story" as well as a forty five minute sports documentary about his basketball career, with the same title.

My dad, Sam Schoenfeld, was also a high school teacher, coach, collegiate basketball referee and founder of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association. In addition, he was also an owner-director of a very successful sleep away camp, called Camp Deerhead. I was very fortunate to have been able to spend some 25 summers at that wondrous place. Growing up under that giant shadow was a hard act to follow.

I attended Jamaica High School in Queens, and graduated from Columbia College in New York City. I was not well traveled. The extent of my excursions was to the Poconos to attend Deerhead and an occasional trip to Florida.I mention this very limited travel experience because I ended up attending a medical school in Switzerland. That's where my unusual adventures, as described in my first book, "OVER THERE", takes place. I have subsequently completed a book about my dad's "Camp Deerhead" called "SLEEPAWAY, MEMORIES OF DEERHEAD."

I founded and ran a very successful internal medical group practice on Long Island, N.Y. and was also the medical director for several local nursing homes. During the height of my medical career, I continued to pursue my interest in photography. (www.drbobphotos.com) In the latter part of the 1990s, I was fortunate to have had two photographic exhibits at one of New York City's most prestigious art galleries, The National Arts Club, at Gramercy Park.

My writing began in 2007 with my first book, "OVER THERE" which was published in 2009. I just completed my third book "OVER HERE" which was released last summer, which brings my life's journey up to date.

So, like my dad, I also had somewhat of an unusual, but of course, a very different history.
