Since my retirement after 50 plus years of medical practice, I began writing. I have already published several autobiographical books such as “OVER THERE”, which describes my five and a half years in Switzerland studying medicine, and then its sequel, “OVER HERE,” which describes my professional and private life right up to my retirement.
The third book I had written describe the evolution of my dad’s coed sports camp, “Camp Deerhead,” as seen through my eyes, which is titled “SLEEPAWAY, MEMORIES OF DEERHEAD.”
My most recent book is entitled, STORIES FROM THE Y, depicting the life stories of 12, of my fellow gym members, replete with photographs and news articles.
My first granddaughter Julia left for her freshman year at college this past September and after a month returned home for the weekend. Before she returned to school she handed me a folded piece of paper, kissed me good by and left.
I opened the paper and started to read and immediately started to cry after the first paragraph. How could I respond to the wonderful gift she had given me. That is the genesis of this book. It is filled with text along with her photographs, depicting the first 18 years of her life.
Dear Poppy,
"One hundred twenty miles from you. Don‘t get me wrong, it has been an amazing experience. A lot of work but nonetheless amazing. However despite this new journey, there is one thing I don’t have here. You. My number one fan. My role model. It’s just different now. Not seeing you is one of the hardest things I had to do. I miss you."
There are five more paragraphs. The complete letter is in the foreword. What she has given to me is the greatest gift any grandparent can receive from a grandchild.
Enjoy her journey.
