"The train's soulful whistle echoing across the valley was interrupted by claps of thunder amidst the steady splatter of rain. Lightening continued its sporadic dance as it flashed the black hillsides and the mausoleum. It was frightening, eerie and almost surreal, like some horror movie. Tired, wet, hungry and afraid of the lightening being so exposed on a hill top in Mudsville during a severe thunder storm, we had little to do but curl up in our soaked jellyrolls and wait. Dinner obviously never arrived and I don't think anyone slept."
This is a nostalgic and humorous autobiographical memoire of Doctor Robert Schoenfeld's vivid recollections and adventures at a sleepaway camp owned and operated by his father Sam.
(Info about the "Play It Again Sam" Documentary Movie)
He spent his first 25 summers at Camp Deerhead and his book chronicles the evolution of a rather small primitive boy's camp in the early nineteen thirties, into one of the most successful and popular co-ed sports camps in the country. It follows him through his summers at camp, as uniquely seen through his eyes.
Recollections and descriptions of sports, color wars, snipe hunts, banquets, camp pranks, his first romantic interest, and more will ignite the memories of anyone who ever attended a sleepaway camp. He eventually sees sleepaway camps for what they truly are. The strong bonds that are forged through shared experiences often last a lifetime and helped mold who we have become.
The evolution of Camp Deerhead and the many humorous adventures and misadventures of Bob and his bunk mates are documented with over 130 photographs taken during those wonderful years. Anyone who has been to a sleepaway camp will easily identify with the many adventures in "Sleepaway - Memories of Deerhead."
Take this trip down memory lane with Bob and relive those glorious summers which have helped to define us all. Although each camp is unique, there is a generic thread that runs through them all. Sleepaway will bring it all back!
This is Doctor Schoenfeld's second book, following the successful publication of "OVER THERE", recounting his 6 years of medical studies in Switzerland.
Doctor Schoenfeld founded and ran a successful group practice on Long Island, New York and has only recently been semiretired. He maintains a strong interest in photography and has had two successful photographic exhibits at one of New York’s most prestigious art galleries, The National Art Club at Gramercy Park. He is married and has three children and four grandchildren.

This is a great book for anyone who has ties to sleep away camp life in the Hancock area. While Deerhead is long-gone, this lakefront is still a magical place for generations who have enjoyed and built memories upon it at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts -- the camp which has occupied this lakefront for the last 40 years. Thank you to the author for sharing his moments & memories and keeping the history alive.
